Since 1992, French speakers have marked May 30th as their day of celebration!

Why the 30th of May ?

In 1987, in the community of La Grand'Terre, the flag of Franco-Terre-Neuviens-et-Labradoriens was raised for the first time during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Sainte-Anne School and Community Center.

In 1992, the community decided to make May 30 THEIR day and to celebrate it with pomp and ceremony at the Confederation Building, seat of the Legislative Assembly, in the capital city of St. John's, Newfoundland.

In 1998, Canada and the province of Newfoundland and Labrador signed an agreement on the promotion of official languages. In 1999, the provincial government finally decreed that May 30 of each year would be Newfoundland and Labrador Francophone Day. That same year, a second agreement was signed between Canada and the Francophone community of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Every year on May 30, the traditional raising of the Franco-Newfoundland and Labrador flag takes place symbolically in each of the province's Francophone regions. This day is an opportunity to celebrate the language and culture of Francophones. The French presence in Newfoundland and Labrador dates back more than 500 years and is an important part of Newfoundland and Labrador culture, even though Francophones today represent only 0.6% of the population.

Francophones and Acadians celebrate and spread the taste, beauty, and richness of Francophone culture among their friends, family, and community.
